Abstract

A febrile seizure is one of the most common emergencies in children. Thus, parents need to know how to handle it to prevent delays and procedural errors in handling. The handling can be thought to parents through health education using Video and Demonstration Methods. This study aims to identify the effect of health education using Video and Demonstration Methods on the psychomotor abilities of the mother in first aid in cases of febrile seizures. This Quasi-Experimental study used a Non-equivalent Control Group Design. The sample was 26 respondents selected using the purposive sampling technique. They were divided into 2 groups, namely the treatment group and the control group with 13 respondents of each. Data were analyzed using Paired T-Test and Independent T-Test. The results of the pretest of psychomotor abilities of the mother in the control group showed that most of the respondents (69.2%) had psychomotor abilities in the range score of 1-11. The posttest showed changes in psychomotor abilities but most of the respondents (53.8%) remained in the range score of 1-11 for psychomotor abilities. However, the pre-test in the treatment group showed that all respondents (100%) had psychomotor abilities in the range score of 1-11. Then, after the intervention, the psychomotor abilities were in range scores of 23-33. The results of the Independent T-Test showed a p-value of 0.000 < 0.05. It means that there is an effect of the health education using Video and Demonstration Methods on the psychomotor ability of mothers in first aid in febrile seizures cases in children aged 6 months - 2 years. Besides the intervention in the form of health education using video and demonstration methods, daily practice to improve knowledge and skills also increase the respondent’s psychomotor ability. Based on the results of the study, it suggests using Video and Demonstration Methods to provide health education in order to improve the psychomotor abilities of the mother in the first aid in cases of febrile seizures.
